Action 9: Man says mix-up left his car uncovered

By Don Griffin

A man paid $1,000 for a warranty on his new car, but said he later found out the local auto sales company mixed up the paperwork, leaving the car uncovered.

Johnny Phillips has a 2001 Mercedes he bought last July for $10,000.

He said Big A's Auto Sales in Rock Hill also sold him a warranty for $1,000. But the warranty company later told him he had no warranty.

“They had no knowledge of my car,” Phillips said.

So he called back to Big A's and was told this: “It was a mix-up with their paperwork,” Phillips said.

Big A's gave Phillips an appointment to have the car inspected and told him they'd then submit the warranty.

But Phillips had to cancel for personal reasons. Later, he said, he had no luck getting Big A's to reschedule the inspection.

Action 9’s Don Griffin got Big A's owner on the phone, who accused Phillips of being uncooperative.

That's when Phillips said he'd had enough.

“Every time I call, I can't get in touch with you guys, now you come with this here. I'd rather have my money back,” he said.

“That's no problem,” the owner said.

The owner then refunded Phillips’ $1,000 and said as a result, he's now changing how he sells warranties and will now have cars inspected before they leave his lot.
