Action 9: Man upset after receiving ambulance bill

By Don Griffin

Bhavesh Patel had a $1,110 ambulance bill for his son that he felt he didn't deserve.

His son got a minor fracture to his elbow playing with other kids. His wife took their son to the CMC Steele Creek emergency.

But Patel said CMC transferred him by Medic to Levine Children's Hospital after his wife questioned the need for an ambulance.

“Why we need (an) ambulance? We can transfer in our car,” Patel said.

Patel said once at Levine Children's Hospital, they learned there were no doctors available until the next day. So they put their son in the car and returned home.

“So they have not done nothing,” Patel said. “They just transferred my son from this hospital to Levine hospital without reason in (an) ambulance, and they did not do surgery.”

The following day, Patel said he took his son back for surgery, again by car.

He said his insurance later refused to pay the $1,110 ambulance bill.

“It’s ridiculous,” Patel said.

Action 9 got in touch with CMC. It said CMC Steele Creek has a policy of using ambulances when transferring patients to certain hospitals for patient safety and to maintain continuity of care.

But after Action 9’s contact, they told Patel he didn't have to pay the bill.

“I feel good,” Patel said.
