Cellphones are good for just about everything, from talking and texting to paying bills online and now even in person.
More and more large companies, including Office Max, are offering apps to let you pay using your phone. It’s an idea that a lot of people, including Alvin Washington, seem to like.
“I do use the smartphone to make purchases as long (as) it’s a secure site,” Washington said.
But Action 9’s Don Griffin says buyers beware. Scam artists can also be targeting consumers, so you want to make sure that you are downloading an authentic app.
The BBB says to make sure your phone is password-protected in case someone steals it.
“If you don't have it password-protected, they can just go out and have a field day with that information, that app in your phone, and go any place that takes mobile payments,” BBB President Tom Bartholomy said.
The BBB says for an added layer of protection, go to the settings on your phone and activate VPN -- virtual private network.
But some consumers worry it’s still not enough protection.
“I don't know that I would,” Mary Shaw said. “I would be a little nervous.”
John Stotler, who has several payment apps on his phone, said he only downloads those from well-known companies.
Still, experts say the more financial transactions that are done on your smartphone, the more vulnerable you may be to hackers.
