Action 9: Woman frustrated by issue with Social Security

By Don Griffin

Shirley Hunter, 66, is in her second year of receiving Medicare.

But last month when she got paperwork from Social Security, Hunter said she found they had mistakenly added her to Medicare Part B, which would pay all of her medical bills.

“And I told them I had Blue Cross Blue Shield, so I wouldn't need the medical plan,” Hunter said.

But she said Social Security deducted the $90 monthly premium for Part B from her benefits check anyway.

That's when Hunter said she started calling Social Security to get them to correct it and refund her money. But she said it’s difficult to get through their automated phone system to talk to anyone.

“It’s very hard to get through to them,” Hunter said. “They ask you all this stuff, and you're not sure what you want.”

So Action 9 got in touch with the Social Security Administration in Alabama, and they looked into Hunter’s complaint. After Action 9’s contact, they had the Rock Hill office call her to correct their mistake.

“They returned my money the same day, but they called as soon as y’all got in touch with them,” Hunter said. “It was wonderful.”

Hunter now tells seniors to pay close attention to any mail from Social Security.
