CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

A woman says she initially paid a Charlotte-area air duct company nearly $5,000 to clean her system after they told her it was covered in mold, but she says they never finished the job.

Linda Edwards, 74, called Alpine Air in December 2012 after seeing the company's $39.95 coupon for air duct cleaning.

After an inspection of her system, she says the Alpine rep told her she had a major problem.

"He said, 'You got mold all over your house,'" said Edwards.

She says the rep told her Alpine would replace the insulation, install a vapor barrier to cover the ground underneath her house, clean her ducts and coils, then apply a sanitizer and a mold treatment.

She says she gave them a check and credit card charge totaling $4,700 after Alpine Air's employee said he had completed the work.

Her son, Clayton Edwards, said he checked the system the next day and found the coils still filthy.

"You're saying they didn't clean anything here?" Action 9 said.

"No. I don't think the cover came off," Clayton Edwards said.

While a plastic vapor barrier was visible inside the crawl space door, farther back, he said, there was nothing covering the ground.

Also, he said the insulation wasn't completed. He has pictures that show the old insulation is hanging down and not replaced.

Linda Edwards said her reaction was "angry, real angry."

She called her bank and credit card company and stopped the $4,700 payment.

Action 9 went to Alpine Air's office in Concord but had no luck getting in touch with the owner.

Action 9 checked with the Better Business Bureau, and it said the company has an F rating and other complaints similar to Edwards'.

"Poor workmanship, incomplete work, struggle to get ‘em back out to complete the work satisfactorily. It's a pattern," said Tom Bartholomy with the BBB.

Alpine Air's attorney wrote to Action 9 stating the company employee told his bosses he had completed the job and that the company has since apologized to the Edwardses.

The attorney said Alpine Air was ready to come out and complete the job but that Edwards would not let them do so.

Alpine said it still hasn't been paid for the insulation.

Edwards wishes she'd checked with the BBB before hiring Alpine Air.

"It's sad you can't trust people like you used to," she said.
