Action 9: Woman says truck unloaded wood chips in her yard

By Don Griffin

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

A Charlotte woman said she got more than she bargained for when a dump truck unloaded its entire bed of wood chips on her yard.

When Latanya Vickers walked out her front door, she saw a big pile of wood chips in her yard.

“It’s a mess,” she said. “I mean, what am I going to do with it? It’s too much.”

Vickers claims it was the result of a misunderstanding with a city tree-trimming crew working in her neighborhood. She said she agreed to accept a small amount of wood chips from the crew, then went inside and came back out to find they had dumped the entire truckload and left.

“When they asked me, ‘Could I use some,’ I said yes. That's where I made my mistake,” Vickers said.

Vickers, who's disabled and couldn’t move the chips, said she had been calling the city since April to get them hauled away.

“So every time I call, I'm getting the runaround,” she said.

That's when Action 9 got involved, going to the city government building to find out what could be done. Action 9’s Don Griffin was sent to the city's communications office, so he asked them to look into Vickers’ problem.

The city's spokeswoman said she checked with various city departments, and she insisted that no one from the city dumped wood chips in Vickers’ front yard.

But the city's spokeswoman dispatched a truck to haul off the chips anyway as a goodwill gesture.

Vickers was happy with the news.

“I just feel so good that finally, they’re finally coming, taking care of the problem,” she said.
