Action 9: Woman says typing mistake led to payment being short

By Don Griffin

Hayden Regisford was two months behind on her mortgage. The monthly payment was $1,849.01.

But when she wired Ocwen Financial a payment before the third month came due, she said it was rejected.

“I asked the representative why, and I was told it was one cent short,” Regisford said.

She said the payment was one penny short because Western Union made a typing mistake.

Now, Ocwen won't accept any of her payments and has given her a foreclosure date.

“All this took place over one penny. I am where I am right now because of one penny, and it’s not fair. It’s not fair,” Regisford said.

Action 9 called Ocwen Financial to find out why they wouldn’t accept her payments and stop the foreclosure.

The Ocwen rep wouldn't discuss her mortgage with Action 9, and refused to let Don Griffin speak to a supervisor.

Griffin said times like this are when homeowners can turn to HUD approved counseling groups, like Community Link. Director Bruce Hamlett said they can definitely help.

“We'll start advocating for them and try to get the best resolution to the problem that's possible,” he said. “That's what we do, we fight for the homeowners.”

Action 9 put Regisford in touch with Community Link, just as she got word from Ocwen they've approved her a temporary loan modification.
