CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Panthers star quarterback Cam Newton is featured on one of two different covers for GQ’s September NFL Kickoff issue.
Following his record-breaking rookie season, Newton faces even more pressure to bring a winning team back to Charlotte.
Newton told GQ’s Brett Martin that he is more than ready to handle the expectations with “cool composure and even a little bit of flair.”
In the issue, Newton touches on the adversities he overcame in college, his father’s role in his success and how he has learned from his past mistakes.
Newton took the opportunity to don some stylish, fall-appropriate attire for the issue.
Jets QB Tim Tebow is also on the cover of the issue, which hits newsstands Aug. 21.
Here are some of the highlights from Newton's interview:
Cam Newton on being modest: “If I come out and say, ‘I will be the greatest to ever play this game,’ that’s a no-no. People want to see humble.”
… on rising above the "talk": “The only thing that’s going to get you away from all the talk is winning. Winning excuses everything.”
… on being Tebow's back-up at Florida: “If I had said to Tim, ‘Man, can we spend some extra time to study the playbook?’ he would have done it. I didn’t take advantage of what was right in front of me. If I had, maybe his mentality would have hit me sooner. Basically I was immature and unfocused. I would never, ever make that mistake again.”
… on being asked to leave Florida: “I sometimes cried myself to sleep at night. But I was thinking, ‘I’ve got to grow up. Either I’m doing it right now or I’m going home a screw-up.’ I was force fed it, and I ate it. It was like divine intervention. It was like a whole new core of Cam, of myself, being created.”
… on his father: “He was like my superhero. If something was broke, he could fix it. If I was lost somewhere, he would find me. If I wascrying, he could cure it. I knew that if I had my father with me, everything was going to be all right.”
