Super Bowl Sunday is one of the greatest celebrations in American culture.  It’s a day that everyone can enjoy and should be considered a national holiday ... and the Monday afterward.

The food, the commercials, the parties, and of course the football make it one of the most watched events in television history every year.

The San Francisco 49ers will take on the Baltimore Ravens, pitting head coaching brothers, Jim and John Harbaugh, against each other. It's the first time in a championship game in American sports history that brothers will face off.

More than 111 million people watched last year’s Super Bowl between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots.

But, 114 million people watched last year’s Super Bowl halftime show as Madonna performed at the ripe age of 53 years old, proving that the Super Bowl is more than just football.

Here are some cool links to get you ready for Super Bowl Sunday this year:

  1. A new Volkswagen Super Bowl ad is causing some controversy, with some saying the spot is racist. The ad is part of the company’s new “Get in. Get happy” campaign.  Volkswagen is standing by the commercial, saying it is designed to brighten the viewer’s day.  Here is a link with all the ads you will see on Sunday (Volkswagen ad is 14th one down) . You make the call.

  2. Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt made one 6-year-old girl’s heart melt when he “proposed” to her to be his fake wife for a day after she posted a sad YouTube video of her crying because she is too young to marry him.   Here is her video and photos of the fake proposal here.

  3. 7 million: Is the number of employees who will miss work on Monday (source: chacha.com), which backs our claim that the day after should be a national holiday.

  4. 6 teams in the NFL don't have cheerleaders -- Bears, Browns, Giants, Lions, Packers and Steelers.  The only question is, "Why?"  Check out a slideshow of NFL cheerleaders while you think about it, here.

  5. National anthem: Since Billy Joel’s 2007 performance, every singer to perform the national anthem has been a female recording artist, including Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera and Carrie Underwood in the last three years. Alicia Keys will carry on that recent tradition this year.  Read more on Bleacher Report's interesting facts on national anthem performances at the big game.

  6. Best big game foods in America: Goldbely.com has a list of the best greasy, messy, meaty all-American game-day foods, which include Buffalo wings, Chicago deep dish pizza, Kansas City BBQ, Texas brisket and more.

  7. Perfect: Heading into the game, the 49ers are 5-0 in Super Bowls and the Ravens are 1-0 in Super Bowls.

  8. This year, a 30-second commercial costs $4 million, up from 3.5 million last year and $42,000 in 1967, Time reports.

  9. Did you know: More than 700,000 footballs are produced every year for use during the NFL season? 72 of those balls are used for the Super Bowl.

  10. Sports Illustrated Extra Mustard has a funny breakdown in the Tale of the Tape between the 49ers and the Ravens here.
