'Silent Disco' makes loud impact in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

First there was Dubstep, then there was DayGlow and now the newest dancing craze to sweep the nation is the Silent Disco.

Just like its predecessors, the Silent Disco is an entirely new concept to Americans and North Carolinians alike.

The concept of Silent Disco is simple, really. A DJ is set up in a tent playing music. Except in this case, the DJ isn’t playing music through loud speakers. Instead, the tunes are sent out via an FM transmitter. People at the disco wear special headphones that can then tune in to the radio station to hear the DJ’s music.

The kicker is people who aren’t wearing the headphones are completely clueless to what is going on. It gives the impression that hundreds of people are dancing and having a good time -- in complete silence.

While events like these have quickly been making their way all over to the United States, the idea is very new to Charlotte.

In fact, Danny Landry, the man behind bringing Silent Disco to Charlotte, couldn’t believe this global craze hasn’t made its way to Charlotte sooner.

“I’m amazed something like this hasn’t been in Charlotte ever before,” said Landry. “It’s definitely an amazing event.”

Friday will be the third installment in a five part Silent Disco series hosted at the Pavillion at the EpiCentre in uptown Charlotte.

Landry said Silent Discos are completely harmless and there have never been any concerns regarding safety.

“People can adjust their own volume on their headphones,” said Landry. “It’s nice because you can turn the music off whenever you want.”

Landry’s company, Full House Productions, brings events like these all over the country, but didn’t quite expect the Silent Disco to take off the way it has.

“Every week we’ve exceeded our expectations. We get more and more people coming out each week,” Landry said.

Anyone over the age of 21 is welcome and admission is free.
