BRATTONSVILLE, S.C. —

On Saturday, Carolina residents can witness the time-honored process of butchering and preserving meat at the Hog Butchering Day at historic Brattonsville.

The celebration shows why pork was so important for the survival of early settlers, and how the hog also provided settlers with essential byproducts critical to everyday life.

The celebration takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, as the Gardner family continues a long tradition of barbecue in the western York County community of Bethesda. Smoked pulled-pork sandwiches and made-from-scratch fresh country sausage sandwiches will be offered.

A barbecue lunch will be available from 11:30 a.m. until it runs out.

Admission is $6 for an adult, $5 for a senior, and $3 for youth ages 4-17.

The celebration is located at 1444 Brattonsville Road, McConnells, S.C. For more information on Historic Brattonsville and directions, visit www.chmuseums.org.
