Family Focus: Company, nonprofit provides beds for families

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Ashley Furniture reached out to customers to help provide warm beds for children this holiday season through the Charlotte nonprofit Beds for Kids.

Channel 9 anchor Natalie Pasquarella was with a family who got a special delivery in time for Christmas, and they were overwhelmed by the generosity.

"I love it," said Hannah Kegris, a mother of three.

She began to tear up, realizing her two boys, ages three and two, will get to sleep on new beds.

"It's perfect," she said.

Kegris heard about Ashley Furniture's mattress giveaway and applied online for a week-long event.

For every mattress sold, Ashley Furniture donates another one to a family in need.

There were crib mattresses on the floor for the boys but were hoping to save up for real beds.

"It's a good Christmas gift," Kegris said. "That's going to be one of their gifts."

Their efforts resulted in 103 mattresses donated.

"Right now at Christmas time, we figured we would try this and see how it works, and the community has responded in a way that was unimaginable," said Kathryn Barmore, with Ashley Furniture.

"It's just a blast to see the smiles," said Daniel Fogarty, with Beds for Kids. "Just to see that it's not just a little thing to do, it's really just a life changing moment for this family."

Kegris agrees. She's touched by the community's kindness this Christmas.

"For everybody that did get a mattress, I thank them, because they gave me what my kids are getting," Kegris said.

Beds for Kids founder said they have a waiting list for beds right now.
