Police: Matthews home 'total loss' after fire

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Fire investigators are still trying to figure out what started a house fire in Matthews Sunday.

Police told Channel 9 the home on Phillips Wood Lane is a total loss.

A viewer sent video of the fire where flames could be seen consuming the house.  Two people ran into the home to see if anyone was there, the officer said

Police said they were at the house the night before the fire after a car ran into it.

"We were here last night due to a motor vehicle accident with minor property damage. It doesn't seem like it's related to anything that's going on now," said Matthews Police Sgt. Stason Tyrrell.

No one was home when the fire broke out.  A daughter rents the home from her parents who live in Bermuda, police said.

One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion.
