Heat index could have temps pushing 100 degrees

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It was pretty hot Wednesday, but be prepared for an even steamier Thursday as the mercury will soar well into the 90s.

The temperatures will top out in the mid-90s in Charlotte, but the heat index values will be close to 100 degrees in many areas.

The only chance for real relief will be far north, where a few thunderstorms are likely to develop Thursday afternoon.

We'll have to wait and see if some of those storms will work their way south toward the metro area late in the day. Those chances appear quite low though.

Relief for everyone does arrive by the weekend and stormy weather on Saturday will eventually lead to cooler and drier weather arriving by Sunday.

It will be great weather as students around Charlotte head back to school.
