Judge to review evidence in UNC student slaying

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — A Superior Court judge says he wants to review the evidence before deciding whether to unseal records involving the investigation of the 2012 slaying of a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Judge Howard Manning said Wednesday he will review each document before deciding whether to unseal it

Police haven't disclosed how 19-year-old Faith Danielle Hedgepeth was killed or information about possible suspects. She was found dead Sept. 7, 2012, in the bedroom of her off-campus apartment.

Lawyers for media outlets asked Manning to release the evidence, saying authorities have provided little information that justifies the continued sealing of the records.

Prosecutors say their investigation will be compromised if records are released. They asked for time to tell Hedgepeth's family if Manning does unseal the records.
