CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Angela Spaulding has nothing but praise for the Salvation Army's Boys and Girls Club.
"They are all about the children," she said.
The single mom shared how much it's helped her 10-year-old daughter.
"This is a place where they can come and be safe and learn, respect all kinds of art and how to give back," Spaulding said.
Spaulding's daughter is one of about 30 children who come from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday after school.
Director Anthony Buckson spoke about the values at the center of the Boys and Girls Club.
"We try to teach and embrace character and character building here," Buckson said.
Buckson is now preparing for Christmas break; there will be a need for child care at that time and the club will stay open all day.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools start break Dec. 21, and the club will be open all day. It will also be open the day after Christmas through Friday.
Buckson said they expect more than 50 students, which means more kids to feed and more activities.
"Possibly museum visits, more field trips, more engaging to the public, because a lot of these kids don't get a chance to really see Charlotte. All the culture and activities that we have, you know these kids deserve a chance and an opportunity to see these things," Buckson said.
Buckson also said the club needs more snacks, so the kids are not hungry midday. He said if those needs are met, it's back to doing what they do best -- teaching and mentoring.
"Things that we teach here is what we're trying to use as tools that they can take out to the real world and use," Buckson said.
The Boys & Girls Club needs snack donations of foods that have shelf life, such as crackers, fruit cups, juice boxes and trail mix. Also, they're asking local corporations to donate community field trip items, such as museum tickets or movie passes.
