Family Focus: EMS workers come together to support family

By Natalie Pasquarella

CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. —

EMS workers in Cabarrus County are coming together to help one of their own whose daughter is fighting cancer.

For the next three days, they're raising money and awareness about the 7-year-old's battle with a brain tumor.

Angel Thompson enjoyed a recent ride in the bucket of a fire truck, courtesy of more than 100 EMS workers who showed up at Bass Pro Shops in Concord Mills to support her and her family.

“It's just been really humbling to know that we could pick the phone up and call any one of them, and they would be right there at the drop of a hat,” said her mother, Myra Thompson.

“When we're going through this difficult time, it's just amazing, and you just feel the love of the people you work with and the people in the community standing behind you,” said Angel’s father, Alan Thompson.

Alan Thompson, an employee with Cabarrus County EMS for more than 20 years, has spent the past two years helping his little girl beat cancer.

In 2010, doctors found a tumor in Angel's brain. She had surgery and was on the road to recovery. Then, this past August, doctors saw tumor growth once again.

But even as Angel gets ready for chemotherapy, it's clear her spirits are high.

“So how does it make you feel to see all these people here for you and for your family?” Eyewitness News anchor Natalie Pasquarella asked.

“Exciting,” Angel said.

Alan's coworkers all came together for a Rooftop Fundraiser on Angel's behalf.

“Emergency services is a huge family,” Sgt. Tess Burchett said. “If something happens to one of us, it happens to all of us.”

Burchett is one of the organizers of the weekend-long event, in which the EMS crew will spend shifts on the roof in hopes customers will take notice and help out, just as Alan has done for the people in his community.

“He's provided all kinds of service to the county and the community for 24-plus years,” David Hampton said. “I mean, when you get into EMS, you're not in it for the money. You're in it because you want to help people, and this is of the whole agency, all the agencies getting together and helping him.”

The “Rooftop Fundraiser” for Angel runs through Sunday, April 22, at Bass Pro Shops in Concord Mills.
