A local mother is taking part in a 5K in Charlotte to help raise awareness for breast cancer.

As Danielle Murray spends time with her little boy, she recalls a time when she thought she would never be a mother.

“My story could've been a lot different,” she said.

In 2008, after dealing with fertility issues, Murray found out she was pregnant. Around the same time, she noticed a hard spot in her breast and a lump in her armpit.

“My gynecologist told me that it was normal to feel changes in your breast during pregnancy from the hormones, and it was probably a cyst,” Murray said.

She ended up miscarrying. And after two doctors dismissed concerns about her lumps, an appearance by Dr. Oz on Oprah prompted her to take action.

“He was telling a story about medical mistakes, and how they switched two breast cancer patients mammogram scans. One of them had breast cancer and one of them didn't,” Murray said.

She decided to get a mammogram and was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer at age 30.

While chemo was rough, she got to meet the man she credits with saving her life when he made an appearance in Charlotte.

“It was like an exciting time during (what) would have been a terrible year, but I had some good stuff come out of it,” Murray said.

Now cancer-free, Murray is getting ready to walk for a cure in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K.

“It raises money for a great cause,” Murray said. “The American Cancer Society has a lot of good programs for breast cancer.”

She hopes taking part in the 5K will make women more aware.

“It prompts people to get mammograms and get their diagnosis, and they really do great things with the money,” Murray said.
