'It's supposed to be done': Derita residents frustrated with road construction delays

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A road construction project in north Charlotte was supposed to be done in two years. Now, Derita residents say the construction is choking their neighborhood.

The project extends Graham Street at Sugar Creek Road to Mallard Creek and extending City Boulevard from Neal Road to Mallard Creek.

The project in north Charlotte along Mallard Creek and the Graham extension should have been done in two years, but residents have been dealing with the issues for nearly five years.

At a community meeting Tuesday, leaders with DOT attempted to give answers, telling residents the biggest issue has been getting utility companies on the same page.

They also said they had to stop working on the project for more than a year.

"The biggest problem was that we had no communication at all," resident Theresa McDonald said. "We're not imagining there was nothing going on. There really was nothing going on."

When it's done, the project should widen intersections and extend Graham Street at Sugar Creek Road to Mallard Creek Road.

But now, neighbors aren't sure it will get done.

"How much time, and when are we going to be finished with this inconvenience," resident Rita Alright Brown said. "It's supposed to be done. Do I believe that, no."

Mineral Springs Road, which is part of the project, closed Tuesday night, adding additional issues for residents.

DOT updated the timeline of the project, saying it won't be done until next April.
