Police: 1 charged after man injured in Salisbury shooting

SALISBURY, N.C. — Salisbury police are investigating after a man was shot Saturday night.

Salisbury police officers responded to East Fisher and South Shaver streets around 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

The shooting happened at 205 South Clay St. when the man was attending a family gathering, police said.

Christopher Shepherd, 44, of Salisbury, was standing outside a house when the suspect came from behind the apartment and shot him twice in the upper legs.

Emergency Medical Services personnel took Shepherd to Novant Health Rowan Regional Medical Center.

He was transferred to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital for further treatment. He has since been released.

Around 1 a.m. Sunday, an officer patrolling the area saw the man wanted in connection to the shooting pumping fuel into the suspected vehicle off West Innes Street.

The man, identified as Joshua Hovis, 29, was taken into custody without incident.

Police said they seized 8 grams of powder cocaine, 8 grams of crack cocaine, 7 grams of marijuana and $685 in cash from Hovis.

Police seized a 9mm loaded handgun and drug paraphernalia from the car, police said.

Hovis was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill, felony possession of Schedule II (cocaine), felony possession of Schedule II with intent to sell and deliver, possession of a firearm by a felon, misdemeanor possession of Schedule IV (marijuana), misdemeanor of drug paraphernalia and carrying a concealed weapon.

He was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $200,000 bail.
