Huntersville home under renovation destroyed in overnight fire

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — Fire investigators are working to learn what started an overnight fire at a Huntersville home that sent one person to the hospital.

Firefighters were called to the home on Devonshire Drive, near Birkdale Commons, around 2:30 a.m. but when they arrived the house was already engulfed in flames.

Officials said that a bystander suffered smoke inhalation and that paramedics ended up transporting that person to Carolinas Medical Center in Huntersville. Their condition was not immediately available.

Channel 9 learned that nobody was in the house because it was being remodeled.

A portion of Birkdale Commons Parkway was closed while firefighters fought the flames.

It took 30 firefighters more than an hour to get the fire under control.

The Mecklenburg County Fire Marshal is investigating.
