CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A driver has been charged with driving while impaired after a crash that left a woman dead Saturday morning in southwest Charlotte, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.
Kelly Ann Conkin, 23, was driving a 2013 Hyundai Elantra on South Tryon Street around 2 a.m. near Moss Road.
The car ran into the curb, which caused it to veer left and hit a median. The car drove over the median and into the opposite lanes, hitting a 2015 Toyota Camry, police said.
Conkin, as well as the four people inside the Camry, Farshad Hosseini, Cecelia Buitiago De Gonzalez, Sonia Rocio Gonzalez and Shophia Hosseini, were taken to Carolinas Medical Center.
Cecelia De Gonzalez, 79, died at the hospital.
Police charged Conkin with DWI and have obtained warrants to charge her with felony death by motor vehicle, felony serious injury by motor vehicle, careless/reckless driving and possession of marijuana. The warrants will be served once she is released from the hospital.
