Woman killed after truck, LYNX light rail train collide in south Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A woman was killed Thursday morning after the SUV she was driving collided with a LYNX light rail train in south Charlotte.

Authorities responded to the wreck just before 10 a.m. at the crossing on Hebron Street and South Boulevard, not far from the Carolina Place Mall.

Police said Ashley Yvonne Riveron, 26, died at the scene.

When Channel 9 arrived at the scene, the front windshield of the train was shattered and the pickup truck was split in two. The truck was dragged about 25 feet.

Officers told Eyewitness News Riveron failed to stop for the crossing arms and signals. They said she hit the crossing arms and came into the path of the light rail train.

Emmanuel Brown, who lives near the intersection, said he has seen too many drivers blow right past the warning signs.

"It's about three times a week somebody gets impatient, don't want to wait on the train," Brown said. "The know the trains coming but they think they can beat the train."

Charlotte Area Transit Systems officials said there is no light rail service near the crash site. They do have a bus bridge from Interstate 485 to Archdale Drive and train service is running from Archdale Station to 7th Street.

Police said there were 38 passengers on board the train. None were hurt in the crash.

Charlotte Department of Transportation said Hebron Street between South Boulevard and Denmark will be closed until 4 p.m. Thursday.
