UNC Charlotte student shot during robbery, school officials say

Police said the shooting of a UNC Charlotte student went to a drug deal.

The victim met two suspects at a home on Bonnie Lane to sell drugs, and that's when the victim was robbed of a gun and cash.

Officers later searched the home and said they found four and a half pounds of marijuana, three rifles and two shotguns.

Police arrested a person on drug charges.

The student was shot during the robbery at an off-campus housing Thursday afternoon, school officials said.

Paramedics responded to the call on Bonnie Lane off Old Concord Road, a short walk from campus, and took the male victim to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, Medic said.

UNC Charlotte school officials said the suspects were seen leaving the scene in a gray Nissan, heading east on Old Concord Road, away from campus. Police determined there was no threat to the school.

Bonnie Lane Road is close to the university and a lot of students rent property along the street.

Brayden Snow, who lives across the street from the shooting, said he didn't hear any shots.

"No, I didn't hear any shots fired. It had to have been inside the house,” Snow said.

Snow said he heard a noise that got his attention.

"It sounded like a car screeching off up the road,” Snow said. It’s kind of common up through here. That's what I noticed, and then five to 10 minutes later the cop cars came."

Homicide and crime scene responded, which is standard in all serious shootings.

"It's something I didn't expect to see this close, like close to a good university too,” Alex Teunis said.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call 911 or Crime Stoppers 704-334-1600.
