1 year later, killing of CMPD dispatcher remains unsolved

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police released video and asked for the public’s help in solving the homicide of a former Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department dispatcher one year ago.

Eyewitness News reporter Ken Lemon spoke to the victim's mother about how difficult it has been knowing her son's killer is still free.

Jeff Johnson's mother put a cross at the spot where her son was found. It's her way of letting people know someone special died here, and loved ones are still waiting for answers.

"We are devastated that this could happened," his mother, Melissa Corbean, said.

She thought by now she would know who killed her son and why are there are still no answers.

"This last year has been empty, just a sadness that has overcome our family," she said.

Johnson walked down a path from his neighborhood at about 2 a.m. on March 19, 2016 to an area along the 4900 block of Central Avenue.

A few minutes later, there was a shots fired call but police found nothing.

The next morning someone walking the trail discovered Johnson’s body.

"I can't hear his voice ever again," Corbean said.

Police believe someone in this van driving through the area at about the same time of the shooting might know something about what happened, and could be the key to finding a killer.

Corbean wants help finding the owner and getting answers.

"It would be priceless to know that whoever did this got brought to justice," Corbean said.

Johnson, as a dispatcher for Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, was the first voice many people heard when they were in dire need of help.

His mother hopes people won't forget that.

"I just think it would be so great if we could get justice for him, because of the help he always gave others," Corbean said.

There is a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
