10-year-old recalls being shot in face Sunday afternoon

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Ten-year-old Shanise Laney still has Band-Aids on her cheek where bullet fragments struck her.

She told Channel 9, her cheek still hurts but she's happy to be home.

The front window of her family's home is shattered after police said Brandon Brewer took out a shotgun and started shooting. Shanise's mom told Channel 9 she's in shock.

"I look at my window and I'm like, wow. It seems like a nightmare," Shanda Laney said.

Shanise told Channel 9 she was at home Sunday with her older sister and a few family friends.

She said Brewer knocked on their door and asked for a cigarette. When they told him they didn't have any, she said that's when he got angry and started shooting.

"He pulled out a gun, cocked it back, and started firing. We shut the door and we all ran and hid," Shanise said. "When I crawled out, I was still low and I was on my way back to the bathroom."

That's when Shanise said she was hit.

She managed to get into the bathroom where they called 911.

Her mom was at work when police called her.

"'Your daughter Shanise has been shot' and that's the only thing I heard and I hung the phone up," she said.

She immediately rushed to the hospital, praying for her daughter to live.

"She was like 'Mommy look at what happened to my face.' I was like, 'Oh baby.' The Lord looked out for her," she said.

Shanda is just thankful her daughter is OK.
