Teen shot while driving to see family in Lancaster

LANCASTER, SC — Lancaster police charged Zion Twitty, 18, with attempted murder.

Officers said Twitty was walking on Williams Estate Drive Saturday when he shot an 18-year-old woman who was driving in her vehicle.

The victim was about to turn in to Caroline Court apartments to see her sister, when a bullet struck her shoulder.

The bullet hit the car from behind in the tail light, traveled through the trunk, the backseat and into the young woman's shoulder.

Capt. Scott Grant said that fact that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time makes this an especially heinous crime.

"It's a very tragic situation for this young lady," Grant said.

The victim managed to drive to Springs Hospital, which less than half-mile away.

Police believe several homes nearby were hit by gunfire during the same incident.

Steve Dinges was sitting in his living room watching TV when he heard the shot hit his window just before 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

"I lifted up the blinds and saw the hole in the window. I backed up and felt something beneath my foot. There's the bullet," he said.

The 9 millimeter shell that hit his house could have been one of many fired at the same time the woman's car was hit.   Channel 9 found two bullet holes in the window of the house next door on Williams Estate Drive.

Police talked to neighbors, and even looked at video from three cameras Dinges has mounted on his house.

However, it was a tip that helped them identify, arrest and charge Twitty on Sunday.

Lancaster police detectives said the victim could have been caught in the crossfire between two people shooting, and they could still make more arrests.

The victim is out of the hospital recovering. Her family did not want to talk about the incident.
