Mother asks for prayers after husband, son killed in wreck; daughter remains in hospital

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A mother is asking for prayers and a miracle after her husband and son were killed in a wreck. Her daughter remains in the hospital.

The two were killed when their car collided head-on with a tanker truck Thursday afternoon, police said. The 10-year-old daughter, Jaleyha, remains in critical condition.

The accident occurred on Steele Creek Road and Westinghouse Commons Drive.

The driver of the car, Ignacio Cordova, 33, of Morganton, and the 14-year-old son, Adrien, who was a passenger in the front seat died.

Jaleyha was in the back seat when the accident happened.

The mother said on Friday that there has been little progress in the girl’s condition.

The driver of the tank truck was not injured.

Workers in the area didn’t see the collision but heard the sound of metal crashing into metal.

“We were just working (and) heard the commotion and everything. (We) came out and looked. We (saw) the car. It had a kid in it. (They) took the kid off, but it’s sad. Two people lost their lives,” Jason Spiker said.

Officers said Cordova was driving a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta when it drifted left of center and hit the truck head-on.

A witness said the Jetta had been passing other vehicles in a no-passing zone prior to the crash.

The area was blocked for hours, which forced some nearby residents to park their cars a quarter-mile away and walk home.

"We eventually had to walk behind our neighborhood, the wooded area, to walk to Westinghouse and be picked up," resident Treecie Lewis said.

The accident has taken an emotional toll on everyone who saw it and its immediate aftermath.

Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash, police said.
