8 DWI charges, dozens of citation at overnight checkpoint

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have released information about how many drivers were charged with driving while impaired at an overnight checkpoint Thursday into Friday.

They said they arrested eight drivers on DWI charges at Tyvola Road and Old Pineville Road in south Charlotte.

Almost 30 drivers were charged for not having a valid driver's license. Police said they handed out a total of 71 charges.

The checkpoint was part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's campaign to make sure drunken drivers stay off the road as the 4th of July holiday approaches.
