9th Congressional District candidate raises more than $1 million

Campaign officials for a Democratic candidate for Congress said they have raised record amounts of money in the 9th District.

Charlotte businessman Dan McCready, has raised more than $1-million on year from the 2018 election.

McCready is a Democratic candidate in the 9th District. The seat is currently held by U.S. Rep. Robert Pittenger, R-N.C.

“We couldn’t be more proud to have reached the $1-million milestone a year before the general election, especially with 95 percent of our support coming from individual contributions,” McCready said. “This is bigger than money. It’s a marker of the historic momentum we’re building across the 9th District. The support we’ve received so far sends an important message -- folks are ready for new leaders in Washington who they can count on to fight for them, not for special interests.”

McCready campaign officials said no Democrat or Republican running in the district has ever raised so much money this far out from the general election, and no Democrat running in the history of the 9th District has ever raised this amount of money.

Pittenger connected McCready to the minority leader of the House of Representatives, U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-California, according to a statement from Pittenger.

"There is no amount of money Dan McCready can spend to run away from his support for the liberal policies of Nancy Pelosi," Pittenger said in the statement.

McCready is facing Christian Cano in the Democratic primary. Cano reacted to the news by attacking the reporter and his primary opponent on Twitter.

"#NancyBoys @JoeBrunoWSOC9 & @McCreadyForNC apparently have never heard of #JonOssof (sic). Lol. #FlipThe9th #CalledToServeOthers #Staywoke," Cano tweeted.

The Democratic primary is in May. Pittenger is facing a Republican challenger, Mark Harris of First Baptist Church of Charlotte.
