Accused child predator who bonded out of jail, skipped court date caught

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — An accused child predator who has been on the run for months after being charged with sexually assaulting a child in 2017 and a different child in 2018 has been arrested, police said.

After being on the loose for two years, 32-year-old Andrew Deavers was arrested in Charlotte on Sept. 1. He was picked up on the Monroe warrants for indecent liberties and child abuse, but he did not stay in jail long.

Deavers was allowed to walk out of jail because he had an unsecured bond, and he was able to leave without paying a dime.

"And who else is at risk now because he's still out there?" said Cheryl Jones, a volunteer at Courtwatch.

The group monitors the court system.

"The guy has already proven that he is not going to be in court when he's supposed to be," Jones said.

Deavers had a court hearing on the indecent liberties and misdemeanor child abuse charges at the Union County courthouse on Oct. 21, but he didn't show up.

The clerk said an order for arrest was issued on Oct. 30, but Deavers had not been arrested until Tuesday morning. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police told Channel 9 Deavers was spotted on North Tryon Street and taken into custody.

Jones said this case is just another example of a broken criminal justice system.

"This is why everyone should get involved in their court system because until the people rise up and say, ‘We have had enough. You have got to start protecting the people out here. It's only gonna get worse,'" Jones said.
