Additional emergency warming shelter to open Sunday night

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — Mecklenburg County officials announced they are opening an additional warming shelter Sunday night because of the cold weather.

Officials said that an emergency overflow shelter will be opened at the Tuckaseegee Recreation Center, located at 4820 Tuckaseegee Road in Charlotte at 6 p.m. and will close at 9 a.m. on Monday, which is open to anyone, including couples and families.

Red Cross volunteers will operate the shelter with assistance from Mecklenburg County staff.

Limited space is still available at the Salvation Army, Men’s Shelter of Charlotte and Room in the Inn.

Once the Men’s Shelter of Charlotte has reached capacity, a bus will be provided to transport individuals from the Men’s Shelter to the recreation center at 5:45 p.m., officials said.

The Urban Ministry Center Outreach Team will continue to walk through the community to encourage homeless individuals to visit a shelter or provide sleeping bags and blankets if they refuse to go to a shelter, officials said.
