Alexander Co. man charged with murder in death of girlfriend's son

ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. — Police have charged an Alexander County man with murder in the death of his girlfriend’s 17-month-old boy.

Justin Carver, 25, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Camden Hudson, after the toddler was taken off life support on Monday at Brenner’s Children’s Hospital.

Investigators said the child sustained traumatic head injuries inside a home south of Taylorsville. First responders reported that the child also had broken ribs and bite marks, according to a search warrant.

"For an individual to cause these kind of injuries to a 17-month-old child, it's hard to stomach," Alexander County Sheriff Chris Bowman said.

On Tuesday, officials released the dramatic 911 call to Channel 9. It was made by Carver, who was babysitting at the time.

The 911 call didn't come from the home though. Instead, police said Carver drove to his grandmother’s house looking for help.

Investigators said Carver was watching Camden, along with a 3-year old, while their mother worked.

Channel 9 learned that the couple met just four months ago, during an online relationship, and that the mother had moved into Carver's home.

Deputies said paramedics alerted them after responding to the 911 call, concerned that the serious head injuries did not match what Carver had told a 911 dispatcher.

In the 911 call, Carver told the dispatcher that the boy had fallen off a couch.

Deputies said an autopsy will be performed Tuesday.

Carver is scheduled to go before a judge on Wednesday in Taylorsville. He is currently being held in the Alexander County Detention Center without bond.
