Argument fuels shootout near east Charlotte businesses

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Someone fired shots into two east Charlotte businesses at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Two men got into a fight over money outside the American Deli after gambling around the corner and that’s when shots rang out on Milton Road.

"Kind of did wake up with the fear that someone was going to happen again today," employee Wendy De Leon Hernandez said.

A security camera captured one man tossed against the glass window, then both drew guns and started shooting with no regard for the 12 people nearby including a 5-year-old girl.

One shot went through the window of American Deli and hit the counter. A man behind the counter was slightly injured by flying debris, and another woman suffered a more serious injury.

"It's a family environment, and you never know what could have happened,” Hernandez said. “More people could have gotten hurt."

Shattered glass flew into the restaurant, covering about half of the dining room. There was only one customer inside at the time.

"I think it's crazy,” Hernandez said. “People out here with guns trying to hurt people just to hurt them."

The shooting frightened ladies at the nail salon next door who ducked for cover.

The owner said they have been here 23 years.

Lien Pham/ Owner: "This is the first time it’s happened,” owner Lien Pham said. “It was scary for everybody.”

The shooters jumped into cars and drove away leaving a chaotic scene behind.

No arrests have been made.
