Suicidal man with gun arrested at Huntersville hospital, police say

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — Police have not said yet whether they plan on charging a man who they said had a gun outside Novant Medical Center in Huntersville Tuesday night.

A portion of Gilead Road was blocked off outside the hospital shortly after 6 p.m. and the hospital was placed on lockdown as police confronted the man in the parking lot.

He was placed into custody about 6:30 p.m.

At the time, authorities urged people to avoid the area of Interstate 77 and Gilead Road near the hospital because of the police investigation.

Police said the man was suicidal and was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

“My wife was coming home from work and she said she saw a helicopter and some activity, and I didn't know what was going on,” resident Ben Dunn said. “We’re just thankful that the HPD had taken care of things and he wasn't on the loose.”

Novant Health statement:

“For the safety and security of our patients, visitors, and team members, this evening Novant Health Huntersville Medical Center initiated a temporary security lockdown due to a police matter that took place outside of our facility. For additional comment or details, please contact the Huntersville Police Department.”
