Authorities arrest boyfriend of missing teacher near Chicago

CHICAGO — Family members of missing teacher Bianca Tanner said Thursday night they are relieved to hear about Tanner's boyfriend's arrest.

Angelo Smith was arrested by United States Marshals Thursday near Chicago.

He was wanted on charges unrelated to Bianca Tanner's disappearance, which is now a homicide investigation.

Cerise Richardson, Tanner's sister, said she believes Smith knows a lot more about her disappearance.

"I definitely think there's more to the story than what he's telling us," she said. "I can't be sure if he's involved, but based off his actions and his lack of concern, I wouldn't be surprised if he did have something to do with it," Richardson said.

Earlier this month, Tanner disappeared from her apartment on Druid Circle. She and her son just moved from Greensboro to live with Smith.

Smith's attorney told Channel 9 he's not sure why U.S. Marshals arrested his client.

"It is unusual, but I don't know why they got involved," said Attorney Kenneth Snow.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have not named Smith a suspect in this case.
