CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man wanted by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department on suspicion of multiple felonies has been captured after police said he stole a running car in South Carolina with a 9-month-old baby inside.
Police said David Monts stole the car from a Chick-fil-A in Columbia, South Carolina, on Saturday and then later ditched that vehicle before stealing another in Efland, North Carolina.
The infant in the car was unharmed and returned to its family.
Authorities said they finally tracked Monts down in West Virginia on Sunday morning following a high-speed chase.
CMPD put out a notice Saturday it was seeking Monts after he allegedly cut off his electronic ankle monitor while in Columbia.
He is charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, assault with a deadly weapon, discharging a firearm within city limits, damage to property and interfering with an electronic monitoring device. He is also likely to face multiple charges connected to his two-day flight from law enforcement.
The assault with a deadly weapon charge stems from an altercation in early March in which Monts allegedly shot a man in an elevator at the AC Hotel on Trade Street in Charlotte.
