Authorities find, arrest armed suspect days after Burke County standoff

CONNELLY SPRINGS, N.C. — Authorities in Burke County have arrested a man they considered armed and dangerous after a domestic dispute led to a shooting and a standoff earlier this week.

The Burke County sheriff said the standoff began around 11 a.m. Monday at a camper on Deer Creek Drive in Connelly Springs when Paul Hyler shot his girlfriend’s son.

The 43-year-old victim, identified as Andrew Jackson, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to the hospital.

Yvone Garcia said her fiancé shot her son in the stomach.

“Pray for my son please,” Garcia said. “I don't care what happens to me, just pray for my son.”

Deputies thought Hyler was inside the camper during the standoff but it turned out that was not the case.

On Wednesday morning, authorities told Channel 9 that Hyler was spotted walking along Baptist Camp Road late Tuesday night and arrested without incident.

He told deputies he was tired of running and police found a Kel-Tec 9 mm caliber pistol in a holster on his side.

Hyler will face a judge Wednesday.
