Authorities arrest woman accused of firing at Cleveland County deputy

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. — Authorities have found and arrested a woman who fired a shot at a Cleveland County deputy Tuesday afternoon in Boiling Springs, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Officials told Channel 9 that two narcotics investigators, wearing plain clothes with badges around their necks, stopped at a home on College Avenue during an investigation.

While the deputies were at the house, Travis McKinney came home and got out of a white Kia Soul, officials said.

Deputies said they saw he had a gun. They said they started talking to him and the conversation escalated to the point where it became "hands on" and the deputies had to shock him with a Taser.

The woman inside the Kia, Brianne Smith, stepped out of the vehicle and fired at least one shot at the deputies, officials said. She got back inside the Kia and drove off, police said.

No one was hurt in the shooting.

On Wednesday, authorities told Channel 9 that community tips led them to Smith and she was arrested without incident.
