BBB issues 2013 year end report

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - On Wednesday, the Better Business Bureau released its annual report for 2013 for consumer activity related to businesses located in the BBB's 20 county service area in the Southern Piedmont of N.C. and S.C.

Included in the report are statistics on consumer requests for business reviews, consumer complaints, settlement rate for complaints filed, and the top five types of businesses that generated the most complaints.

In 2013, consumers requested 2,253,263 reviews on local businesses, compared to 1,826,795 consumer requests in 2012 -- a 23 percent increase.

"The good news is that consumers are checking out businesses in record numbers," said BBB President Tom Bartholomy. "They have gotten the message about how important it is to do their homework before they sign a contract, and that will make them less likely to be ripped off."

In 2013, consumers filed 13,993 complaints against area businesses, up from 13,142 complaints filed in 2012 -- a six percent increase.

"The BBB continues to see an increase in consumer complaints filed against businesses," said Bartholomy. "Consumers are more willing to file disputes over smaller amounts of money today than they were a few years ago."

The overall settlement rate for all complaints filed by consumers in 2013 reached a record high of 90 percent, up from 88 percent in 2012.

The top five types of businesses with the most complaints:

1. Auto dealers - new cars
2. Television - cable and satellite
3. Collection agencies
4. Auto repair services
5. Auto dealers - used cars
