EXCLUSIVE: Ice crashes through windshield of big rig, driver hospitalized

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A tractor-trailer driver was taken to the hospital after a chunk of ice crashed through his windshield while he was driving Friday morning in Charlotte.

The ice fell from an overpass onto the truck on Interstate 485 at Mount Holly Road in northwest Charlotte around 4 a.m.

The ice chunk was about the size of a dodgeball when it crashed through the windshield.

Paramedics said the driver suffered life-threatening injuries.

State Department of Transportation officials told Channel 9 that icy conditions have been reported across the region, not just on secondary roads but primary roads and highways as well.
