Big-rig overturns, spilling hundreds of Christmas trees

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — Firefighters in Burke County spent an hour moving hundreds of Christmas trees after a tractor-trailer carrying them crashed.

Eyewitness News was on scene just before 6 p.m. Thursday on a dangerous curve along Highway 181 north of Morganton.

The driver lost control and overturned, officials said.

"I first came around to the front where the driver was and I could smell the Christmas trees," said Edward Fleming, Oak Hill Fire Department. "I didn't know how many but I knew there were Christmas trees here."

The truck driver had to go to the hospital, but should be OK.

Firefighters believe the trees were being delivered to Lowe's home improvement stores.
