CALDWELL CO., N.C. — Caldwell County residents are being advised to boil water before consuming it, or to use bottled water, after a water line break that left hundreds without water Friday was repaired.
More than 300 customers on Collettsville and Abington roads, as well as all side roads, were without water for hours while Caldwell County Water Department crews worked to fix the break.
County officials confirmed around 2:30 p.m. that the line had been repaired.
Crews believed cold temperatures caused the major, 12-inch water line to burst early Friday.
Workers were using heavy equipment to dig out the line because it is laid in rock.
After the break was fixed, officials said Caldwell County water customers were experiencing periods of low pressure and outages in the distribution system, which increased the potential for back siphonage and the introduction of bacteria into the water system.
Officials with the Division of Water Resources advised all affected residents to boil water or to use bottled water for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation.
County officials said vigorous boiling for one minute should kill any disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water.
Infants below the age of 6 months and pregnant women should use an alternate water supply, such as bottled water, whenever possible, officials said.
County officials urged water customers to conserve water whenever possible.
