Car crashes into home in Charlotte, pinning one person inside, officials say

A car crashed into a house Wednesday afternoon in northeast Charlotte, pinning a man inside, officials said.

Chopper 9 SkyZoom flew over the scene near the intersection of Malibu Drive and Highlake Drive, where paramedics and firefighters were on the scene.

Emergency workers said the driver was headed south on Highlake Drive when he veered off the road, crashed through the house and then spun around.

Crews had to cut the driver out of the car. Officials said he was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries to his face and body.

Channel 9 is asking officials how seriously the driver was hurt.

An elderly woman who lives at the home was in another room of the house and wasn't injured, but officials said she was taken to the hospital because she was shaken up.

Fire crews said they will work with the Red Cross and other agencies to find the woman a warm place to stay.

Olive Edmonson, a neighbor, said she was listening to the news when she heard a loud bang.

She said a friend called saying that sound was a green Altima that rammed through the back of her neighbor's home.

“It is scary because it's hard to think a car could go up that embankment,” Edmonson said.
