Carolina Waterfowl Rescue officials said 35 birds died, while staffers are treating about 50 other birds for burns and smoke inhalation. Other birds were saved.

"These animals are family to us, and for something like this to happen, it's really hitting us all close to home and in our hearts," said Joyce Gehring, a shift leader at the Carolina Waterfowl Rescue.

Volunteers said they noticed smoke coming from a building adjacent to the barn around 6:30 p.m.

Officials said the fire started in the barn, which is connected to a bird room where the birds undergo treatment after they are out of an animal hospital.

Staff said an electrical outlet appears to be the cause, but the Union County Fire Marshall is investigating.

Officials haven't yet estimated the damage.

Carolina Waterfowl Rescue is asking for donations to help cover the cost of medical supplies and rebuilding. Among the items they need are an air purifier, a stethoscope, bales of wheat straw and large clear totes for storing supplies.

"We are not federally funded -- all by volunteer donations -- so any monetary donations would be fabulous," Gehring said. "Would really help us out at this sad and tragic time."

The rescue team said treatment to save the remaining chickens, ducks and geese will take days.
