Catawba Co. man flown to hospital after falling down old well

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A Catawba County man was airlifted to the hospital after falling more than 25 feet down an old well Sunday.

Firefighters worked for more than an hour to rescue the man, who fell into the well behind his home.

Friends said he had been working on filling the well earlier in the day and accidentally stumbled into it Sunday night.

Several people in the neighborhood rushed to help after hearing his cries for help.

"He was just groaning," said Kendall Dickerson. "Just tried to keep him calm because everyone else was causing a panic and we didn't want him to go into shock. So we were just trying to keep him calm until the EMS crew got there."

Firefighters have not identified the injured man but said he was talking to them during the rescue.
