CATS parking garage closed due to safety, could be connected to another

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Channel 9 investigated a parking garage Charlotte Area Transit System officials shut down amid safety concerns.

The garage on North Davidson Street was shutting down Tuesday night.

There is a connection the garage has to one that collapsed in another part of the state last year.

CATS employees couldn't park their personal vehicles in their parking garage off North Davidson Street for a second day.

Caution tape is blocking all the entrances after officials said they discovered materials used to build the garage were also used in a faulty deck in Cherokee.

Cherokee officials said there's only one parking garage in the town and it belongs to Harrah's Casino.

In 2015, a section of pavement in the garage gave way causing damage to some vehicles.

Last year, part of the deck collapsed because of a component failure on the first-floor ramp.

A lawsuit filed by the Tribal Casino Gaming Enterprise related to the collapses.

It claims sealant between concrete grids was never set and improper carbon material led to widespread cracking.

A CATS spokeswoman said she isn't sure what material was used in their deck.

An inspector visited the site Wednesday, but it's unclear how long the deck will remain closed.

Carl Llewelyn's mother is an employee and said if it isn't the safe, the city should consider knocking it down.

“I don't like that at all,” he said. “I definitely think they should rebuild this.”

CATS officials told Channel 9 they're looking into whether the same companies that built Harrah's parking garage are the same ones that built their deck.
