Cyclist hospitalized in east Charlotte hit-and-run

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Emergency crews had to close a busy section of Central Avenue early Friday morning for hours after a hit-and-run crash involving a cyclist.

Police said David Spranger, who was riding his bicycle, was hit on Central Avenue near the old Eastland Mall around 5 a.m. A minivan hit Spranger, 51, in the rear tire throwing Spranger from the bicycle, police said.

"He was cognizant of safety and being careful and aware," Pam Murray, fellow cyclist and co-worker, said.

Officers said van that hit Spranger then drove off. Officers said witnesses and debris found at the scene identified the vehicle involved a silver Ford Windstar minivan, ranging between the 1999-2003 models.

Officials said the van would have front end damage from hitting the bicycle and may have damage to the hood and passenger-side windshield.

A crumpled bicycle could be seen surrounded by police tape in the middle of the road.

Central Avenue was closed between Albemarle Road and Sharon Amity Road for nearly two hours while police investigated.

Spranger’s bicycle could’ve had cameras on it, Murray said.

“He generally did have one or two GoPro cameras on his bike,” Murray said.

Spranger was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries including broken bones.
