Charlotte grandfather's murder unsolved 1 year later; police seek information

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte's first murder of 2016 is still unsolved.

On Friday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department made a new push for information in the death of a retired handyman who was attacked while he was cleaning his house on Columbus Circle.

Carl Grier's brother hopes his heartbroken plea for answers will finally lead to a break in the case.

"I'm never going to stop asking until I find out who killed my brother," Ricky Grier told Channel 9.

He has been waiting 13 long months for police to catch the killer.

"I seen blood on the front porch and when I opened the door he was lying in a pool of blood," Grier remembered.

Officers think someone who knew Carl Grier attacked him in January, possibly while he was sweeping his floor.

Detectives are pushing the public for answers to the two burning questions: Why was he killed? Who killed him?

"It's just a matter of getting those people comfortable talking to police and just trying to tug at their heartstrings and let them know there's a family out there in need of answers," said Capt. Cecil Brisbon.

Grier said he doesn't want anyone to forget his brother's name or his face, so he won't stop pleading for those answers.

He worries neighbors are too concerned about their own safety to speak up.

"They just got to worry about the Lord. I would just like whoever knows, if they know anything if they would come forward instead of holding it in because it's going to come out sooner or later," Grier said.

For anyone who worries they'll be in danger for talking to police, it's important to note the CMPD tip line is anonymous.

A $5,000 reward is now being offered in the case.

Grier was a father of two and had four grandchildren.

Anyone with information about Grier’s death is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Callers do not have to give their name.
