Charlotte leaders considering 4 options for Eastland Mall site

CHARLOTTE, NC — Thursday, Charlotte's Economic Development Committee will meet for the last time to tell councilmembers what they should look for when choosing the developer for the old Eastland Mall site.

There are four options on the table for the transformation of the 70-acre wasteland of parking lots.

The projects include a FC Barcelona Soccer Academy, a multiplex featuring a movie studio, a YMCA, and new homes geared toward millennials.

All four projects would likely need some money from the city, but it's still unclear how much.

The city owns the land so it could make the final developer include affordable housing units on the property.

However, councilmembers say they don't want to do that. Instead, they're focused on supporting a project that they think will bring life - and jobs to east Charlotte.
